How Devon Heaven Hideaways ended up on national TV
Appearing on Channel 4’s Four in a Bed was an experience that neither Mum nor I will ever forget. When we first heard we had the opportunity to be on the show, we were both filled with excitement, along with a healthy dose of nerves. As filming got closer, the reality of what we were about to do truly set in. This would be a big moment for our business, but we also saw it as a golden opportunity to showcase everything we’ve worked so hard for.
A family farm through the generations
The farm has been in our family for four generations. It was purchased by my great-grandfather from the Church, and he farmed the land while supplying the village with its produce. My grandfather took over from him, and in the 1980s, Mum and Dad stepped in to continue the family tradition. But times changed. Larger farms with greater economies of scale began to dominate, and our small farm was no longer viable. Faced with a new reality, they had to find another way to make a living, and that’s when the holiday lets began.
As a family-run business, we’ve poured our hearts into turning our farm in Kenn, Devon into a holiday destination. The journey has not been easy, but it has been incredibly rewarding. Transforming part of the farm into a peaceful retreat that offers a unique experience for our guests has been a true labour of love. So when the chance arose to appear on Four in a Bed and share our story, we couldn’t turn it down, nerves or no nerves.
We love what we do, but competition in the holiday market is fiercer than ever. Every corner of Devon and beyond seems to have a new business competing for visitors, and as a small farm diversification project, we know that standing out is vital. Taking part in Four in a Bed gave us the chance to do just that. The exposure was invaluable. We were able to showcase not only our beautiful location but also the passion that drives us.
From nerves to pride
While we were nervous, we were also incredibly proud of everything we had created, from the homemade touches in the accommodation to the breathtaking surroundings. We felt confident that guests would love the atmosphere we had worked so hard to build. But that didn’t make the idea of having our property judged by strangers on national television any less daunting.
Although we would have loved to win, finishing in a close second felt like a huge achievement. We received the highest scores from our fellow contestants, which was a real affirmation of the effort we’ve put into our business over the past decade. More important than the scores were the fantastic comments we received. The praise for our hospitality, the warmth of our welcome, and the unique charm of our business left us feeling incredibly proud. It was a reminder that no matter the outcome, we are on the right path. And of course, converting Steve from the Thorverton Arms into a glamper was a win in itself!
At the end of the day, it’s not about winning or losing. It’s about the people we meet, the lessons we learn, and the way we continue to grow. Mum and I are more determined than ever to keep moving forward and build on the legacy we’ve started. The support and feedback we’ve received have only strengthened our belief in what we are doing.
Looking ahead
Being part of Four in a Bed was a wonderful experience that not only showcased Devon Heaven Hideaways but also gave us a platform to connect with so many incredible people in the industry. While we didn’t take home the prize, we truly feel like winners knowing we’ve achieved something special. We are both so proud of Devon Heaven Hideaways.
As we continue to develop our farm diversification project, we look forward to welcoming more guests and sharing our passion for a business that means so much to us.
